Each bag has a story of its own, and now you have the chance to write the next chapter for this one. Made from part of an up-cycled vintage cotton sari and a repurposed plastic rice bag, as seen in the second picture, this bag was handmade by a local Indian woman using the kantha stitch, which is a sewing technique that originated in West Bengal. The ladies at ReMade are highly respected and work in an environment guided by fair trade principles in order to produce ethical textiles.
One sari can be made into mulitple Market Tote bags. Each bag will have the same colors, but possibly different arrangments of the same pattern. Just as it's name demonstrates, there are many uses for our Market Tote Bag! Take it to the market or grocery store wearing it as a cross-body or shoulder bag for hands free shopping and meandering around your favorite places. Its great as a gym, pool, or beach bag with the inside lining being made of a repurposed rice bag, or 'bosta' as they say in West Bengal, making it waterproof! The versatility continues with the kantha stitch making it sturdy enough to hold many books too, with its box cut corners you can fit quite a few! While you are at it, get a couple extra to keep in the car for when you need that bag and forgot it at home. Carry it with pride knowing that your purchase has helped women that have been marginalized now understand what it means to find work in a fair trade working environment!
Please note that our bags are made from previously worn saris and may have some imperfections like patches or typical wear and aging. These slight imperfections tell a part of the story and add to each bag's charm and uniqueness. With your purchase of this Market Tote Bag, yours will be the same color and pattern (or similar depending on which part of the sari was used to make your bag!) of what is in the first picture.
Receive a photo with your purchase! Each ReMade purchase includes a color photo of of the ladies that have been employed and empowered by ReMade and hand make the products you buy. There are some ladies that chose not to have their pictures taken, so to honor them and respect their wishes, you will receive a picture of several ladies that work at ReMade. You can also find the bios of each lady on this website under "Artisians".
